This side-talk cardioid microphone is designed to improve speech intelligibility in very noisy environments.
It is designed for discussion from the shortest possible distance, ie directly in front of the speaker's mouth. Its depth drop is compensated by the proximity (proximity effect). It therefore has a constant frequency response for the speaker – except for the treble boost – while it has a frequency response with a low-frequency drop for background noise coming from a greater distance. As a result, background noise is transmitted weaker than that of the speaker.
