This side-talk cardioid microphone is designed for talking from a short distance, ie just in front of the speaker's mouth.
Its depth drop is compensated by the proximity (proximity effect). It therefore has a constant frequency response for the speaker – apart from the treble boost – while it has a frequency response with a low-frequency drop for background noise coming from a greater distance. As a result, background noise is transmitted weaker than that of the speaker.
